Are We Really in the New Covenant?

Messianic Apologetics editor J.K. McKee recently encountered a number of posts from a ministry called Torah Babies on his Facebook feed, which claimed that the prophesied New Covenant of Jeremiah 31:31-34 and Ezekiel 36:25-27 is not yet operative for the people of God (see articles: “Are We Under a New Covenant?” and “Y’shua and the Renewed Covenant.”) Are we really in the New Covenant, or not?

This video podcast considers the wider scope of expectations in Jeremiah 31 and Ezekiel 36 as they involve the restoration of Israel’s Kingdom, and the return of Israel proper to the Holy Land. Given the many references to Jeremiah 31:31-34 and Ezekiel 36:25-27 throughout the Apostolic Scriptures (i.e., Hebrews 8:7-13; 10:14-18; Romans 8:1-4; 2 Corinthians 3; Titus 2:14; et. al.), but most especially Yeshua’s direct reference to His work inaugurating the New Covenant (Luke 22:20), it would be most impossible to say that we are not living in the era of the New Covenant. Yet, via the theological principle of realized eschatology–where future realities of the age to come have broken into the present evil age–it is obvious that more is to take place regarding the expectations of the New Covenant in the future.

In the present, Believers in Israel’s Messiah surely benefit from the promises of permanent atonement, a cleansing from sin, a new heart and a new spirit, and a supernatural transcription of God’s Instruction or Torah onto their psyche. In the future, the wider dimensions of the New Covenant will be realized as they involve the return of the exiles to the Promised Land, their prosperity, and the return of the Messiah to reign from Jerusalem.
