Romans 6:23: responding to “Eternal life is a free gift.”

Pastor: Romans 6:23: Eternal life is a free gift.

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Messiah Yeshua our Lord.”

The pastor is entirely correct in telling us that salvation is free and only attainable through Yeshua the Messiah (Jesus Christ). Salvation is a free gift and cannot be earned through our works or any kind of human action. Salvation is completely unattainable through Torah observance and following God’s commandments. I would take heavy issue with anyone in the Messianic movement who believes a person to be saved solely because he or she is “Torah observant.” As the CJB/CJSB renders Romans 6:23, “For what one earns from sin is death; but eternal life is what one receives as a free gift from God, in union with the Messiah Yeshua, our Lord.”

The analysis of The New Testament Validates Torah, affirming the value of the Torah or Law of Moses for Messiah followers today, has not been compiled at all to deny the Biblical reality that salvation is freely available to all through Messiah Yeshua. Yeshua came to Earth on our behalf and freely gave His life up by being sacrificed for us, so that we might have reconciliation with the Father. The Apostle Paul says that the result of us sinning is death—meaning that we will be eternally separated from God—but that we can have life, eternal communion with God, only by receiving Yeshua into our lives.

We sin by disobeying God’s commandments contained in the Torah, yet we cannot be saved through keeping the Law. The Torah, rather, defines what we are all guilty of before the Lord. As Believers who have confessed our sins and received Messiah Yeshua into our lives, we recognize that the Torah cannot save us, but that it is the standard which we have failed to live up to.

Regenerated Believers have a definite advantage over non-Believers—who may attempt to keep God’s commandments in their own mortal strength, not realizing that without Divine intervention they are completely lost. Regenerated Believers have the empowerment of the Holy Spirit, and it is the Spirit which should convict us when we find ourselves doing our own will and breaking His commandments, and not the will of God. Obedience to God’s commandments is a definite part of our continued sanctification, as we accomplish His will being set-apart from the world.
